The Society for International Development, in partnership of the Heinrich Boll Foundation and Strathmore Energy Research Centre, invites the public to register and the attend the upcoming hybrid Public Energy Futures Forum, under the theme, 'Nuclear Energy for Climate Mitigation', scheduled for Tuesday 29 October 2024, 1400 t0 1700hrs (EAT Nairobi).
This public forum dialogue that will be organized in a hybrid format - In-person and live coverage on YouTube and Zoom, seeks to amplify the discourse on several core issues on justice, viability, affordability, grid expansion and integration with already existing energy systems in a comprehensive manner addressing both the opportunities and challenges associated with its development. By examining these core issues, the dialogue will provide insights into whether nuclear energy can play a meaningful role in Kenya’s energy future or if it risks becoming another costly and contentious project.
The specific objectives of this forum are:
- To explore nuclear energy potential as a long-term solution for Kenya’s decarbonization goals while considering its role alongside renewable energy sources and its integration into Kenya’s energy mix.
- To assess how nuclear energy development aligns with energy justice principles, exploring safety measures, waste management and policy frameworks and strategies to support safe and effective deployment of nuclear power.
- To foster collaboration among stakeholders in climate, energy and nuclear sectors in addressing economic and infrastructural readiness, potential pitfalls to creating costly or dormant projects.
We wish to extend to the public this invite to register and attend, and be part of this critical discussion on the Kenya's energy future.
