We are seeking to commission insightful, well-researched think pieces that delve into the multifaceted challenges and opportunities within Tanzania’s energy system to contribute to the curation of the Sustainable Energy Futures for Tanzania Report.

The Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Energy Futures for Namibia, hosted by Society for International Development in collaboration with Namibia Youth Energy Forum, was held on 5 July. This event provided a platform for young Namibians to reflect on the current energy landscape and strategize their involvement in shaping Namibia's energy future.

This context paper describes Tanzania’s energy mix today, and the energy choices facing its society.

On Monday 22 July 2024, SID, in partnership with Heinrich Boll Foundation, hosted the Sustainable Energy Futures Project public virtual workshop under the theme ‘Energy Policy & Dilemmas of a Just Transition'.

Kenya has overtime formulated and effected a number of policies to govern the energy sector which laid foundation for separation of generation from transmission and distribution in the electricity sub-sectors. The REFiT policy was one of the policies formulated as an instrument to promote investment and generation of electricity from renewable sources.

Leveraging on the success of youth engagement at the Africa Climate Summit, SID sort partnerships with other likeminded organizations, to forge and advance implementation options for youth engagements in climate at the global arena - the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP28), hosted in Dubai, UAE on November 30, to December 13, 2023. 

SID with support of the Heinrich Boll Foundation Nairobi, and in partnership with Strathmore University Energy Research Centre held an open and enlightening Public Energy Futures Forum on 17th November 2023, discussing the complexities of Kenya's energy and climate landscapes; the impact of high energy costs on economic growth, and the pathways to address these issues.

The analysis emerging from this initiative and the three scenarios deduced presented challenge to us to imagine different ways the region might meet its energy needs in the period towards 2050 within a context of complex political and economic transitions coupled with looming ecological and climate limits.
