About the forum
This public dialogue provided a platform for dialogue and debate on nuclear energy development discourse in the country that has brought to light critical and concerning issues on justice, viability, affordability, grid expansion and integration with already existing energy systems. This discussion on nuclear energy and climate change mitigation nexus ought to be comprehensive, accounting and addressing both the opportunities and challenges associated with its development. By examining these core issues, the dialogue provided an avenue for stakeholders to discuss and explore as to whether nuclear energy can play a meaningful role in Kenya’s energy future or is it a risky, costly and contentious project.
The specific objectives of this forum was:
- To dissect the proposed nuclear energy developments in Kenya as an alternative long-term solution for Kenya’s decarbonization efforts, vis a vis its role alongside other renewable energy sources and its integration into Kenya’s energy mix
- To assess Kenya's nuclear energy development in the context of energy justice principles, exploring the intended safety and waste management measures, as well as the policy frameworks and strategies for the deployment of nuclear power.
- To foster collaboration among stakeholders in climate, energy and nuclear sectors in addressing economic and infrastructural readiness, potential pitfalls to creating costly or dormant projects.
