The State of East Africa Report 2008: Nature Under Pressure

This State of East Africa Report 2008 presents a snapshot of the status of the region's water, food production, and energy resources. These are arguably three of the most important elements in the region's natural system that sustain and enhance the quality of human life.

The message carried by this report, using data presented in a selection of images and charts, is simply this: the combination of a rapid increase in the number of people in East Africa, with their aspiration for prosperity or desperate flight from grinding poverty, is exerting significant pressure on the abundance with which nature gifted this region. Furthermore, the unpredictable but increasingly visible effects of climate change will make life in the future even more uncertain.

Finally, the report asks a number of questions and challenges us to pay attention to nature's clues, to understand the connection between human activity and nature's response, and to adapt our livelihood strategies to the changing reality.
