The State of East Africa Report 2013: One People, One Destiny? The Future of Inequality in East Africa

The report examines the region's impressive economic growth and its future prospects, building on the narrative that Africa is transitioning from ‘hopeless’ to ‘aspiring.’ The African Development Bank's ‘Africa in 2060’ report anticipates East Africa, including new members like Sudan and Ethiopia, will dramatically increase its share of Africa’s GDP and see significant rises in per capita income by 2060.

Despite these optimistic projections, there is a critical issue: the benefits of growth are not equally felt by all East Africans. The Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community emphasizes balanced growth, equitable distribution, and a people-centered approach, but many East Africans question why they are not experiencing improved economic conditions.

The report delves into the reality of inequality in East Africa, exploring how it manifests, the factors driving it, and its potential evolution over the next thirty years. It offers strategic policy options to address inequality and encourages dialogue on its implications for regional integration. By providing detailed data and analysis, the report aims to support better governance and foster a more inclusive growth process.
